Terry and Kim Cleven own Grygla’s local cafe

Terry and Kim Cleven, the owners of The Grain Bin Café, have been the proud owners of this business for almost eleven years now. There isn’t a day they regret making the decision to buy the old café and start a thriving business in the small community of Grygla, Minnesota. In an interview last week, Kim said she was looking for something closer to home so she wouldn’t have to drive so far and she had cooking experience so it sounded like a good idea.
Two years ago they bought a new location that was only a few blocks away from their previous location. The new building had many opportunities and the couple was glad they had switched locations. A perk of the new building is that in the winter time it’s actually warm in there! “I remember the wind would come through the cracks of the walls at the old building and you would have to wear your jacket inside,” Kim recalled. They also agreed that the atmosphere is so much friendlier than at the old location.
Although there are some setbacks to owning your own business, such as you’re always working for what seems like twenty-four hours. They also said that it’s like they’re at the café all the time! The café has eight employees total, counting themselves, six that are part time and two that are full time employees. Even though it is hard work and long hours Kim said that she loves to work there and that she enjoys it.
Some special features of the café is that it is also the host of a chiropractor who is in Grygla every Friday. The Clevens also took over the senior meals which were previously hosted at the Community Center. The days for the senior meals are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, where anyone over age 65 can come and have a meal at the café with their friends.
When Kim and Terry aren’t at the café they like to spend their time at home. Kim likes to read and play the piano she is also into making homemade cards. Terry and the boys enjoy going fishing when they aren’t at the café. They say the best part about working there would be the people. They love to meet new people and to be a part of the community is also a big thing for them.
Some future plans for the Grain Bin is to always be thinking about different things to be putting out on the buffet and get some new foods out there. Kim would also like to start selling essential oils there too. Maybe have a corner for chemical free beauty and health products such as shampoos and soaps. She is always open for suggestions and is open for anyone’s advice. The Grain Bin Café is open at 6:30am-5pm on Monday through Saturday and from 6:30am-2pm on Sundays.
