Through the Fire, Her Faith Endured: Joni DeSchane’s Story of Survival and Hope

BAGLEY, Minn. — An extraordinary story of survival, faith and perseverance unfolded Wednesday, October 14, as Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning (NELL) welcomed author Joni DeSchane to the Bagley American Legion for her presentation, “A Life Born in Flame.”

What began as the story of a toddler surviving a devastating crib fire became a deeply personal and spiritual journey through childhood adversity, difficult relationships, addiction and, ultimately, the discovery of strength, stability and purpose.

Born in Pinewood, Minnesota, DeSchane’s life was forever changed by a fire in northern Minnesota in January 1978, according to her memoir, Out of Fire and Into Light: A Life Born in Flame.

The fire was only the beginning of a childhood marked by uncertainty and instability. DeSchane described moving from her birth mother’s care through several foster families before eventually being adopted.

Unfortunately, adoption did not provide the loving, secure childhood she might have hoped for. DeSchane described an abusive adoptive mother and a life reminiscent of Cinderella, but without the fairy-tale ball or happy ending.

Throughout her presentation, however, one theme remained constant: her faith.

DeSchane shared her belief that Jesus had been present within her life from the time she was approximately 18 months old. Despite the many hardships she experienced, that spiritual connection remained an enduring source of strength.

Her journey into adulthood brought additional challenges. She spoke openly about struggles with addiction and a difficult relationship with a man she found herself unable to easily leave behind.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define the entirety of her life, DeSchane continued moving forward, carrying with her the faith that had sustained her since childhood.

During her presentation, DeSchane explained that her memoir provides a more detailed account of the investigation surrounding the fire. She indicated that the book explores circumstances and events that could not be fully addressed during her NELL presentation.

Her life eventually took her to Colorado, where she lived for a number of years before returning to northern Minnesota.

Today, at 48, DeSchane has been married for 20 years and is the mother of two children. Her present-day life offers a striking contrast to the uncertainty and adversity that marked so much of her childhood.

Approximately two or three years ago, she began considering the possibility of writing her life story. That decision ultimately led to the publication of Out of Fire and Into Light: A Life Born in Flame, a memoir documenting experiences that span decades she released March 2026.

No matter what life throws our way, Joni’s story reminds us that even through unimaginable trauma, suffering, and adversity, the human spirit can endure. Her journey is a powerful testament to the strength found in remaining connected to her Source—her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Through it all, she never lost sight of the One who sustained her.

As DeSchane concluded her presentation, the audience responded with extended applause. Several attendees subsequently purchased copies of her book, demonstrating an interest in learning more about the extraordinary experiences she had shared.

For DeSchane, the publication of her memoir is not the final chapter. She has decided to begin pursuing public speaking engagements, offering other audiences an opportunity to hear her story firsthand.

Her experiences carry messages of faith, survival, perseverance and the possibility of building a meaningful life despite an extraordinarily difficult beginning.

The story DeSchane shared with NELL attendees was not simply about surviving a fire. It was about surviving everything that followed.

And perhaps that is the most compelling message of A Life Born in Flame: the circumstances of our beginnings do not have to determine the entirety of our lives.
