“The love and support could be felt on Saturday,” commented Shaunna Olson, wife of Greg Olson, who is currently in the fight against cancer.
A benefit was held last Saturday at the Grygla School for Greg who is undergoing treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma. At the event, taco-in-a-bag was served, along with a 50/50 drawing, a bake sale, meat raffles, a silent auction, and a cornhole tournament. The turnout was fantastic, and the Olson family felt the love. Shaunna stated, “Words can’t express the gratitude we have for the outpouring support that we have received during this time. We are so blessed and fortunate to live in such a great community and be surrounded by such caring family and friends.”
The benefit was made possible by so many people. The Olsons wanted to give special recognition to Tausha Severts and Brenna Bakken for organizing and leading the benefit. Also, to all the individuals and businesses in the community and surrounding communities who donated to the benefit and worked to make it happen. Shaunna said the support and words of encouragement are just so greatly appreciated.
Greg added, “It was just the boost needed to get through the last part of treatment.”
Greg is over halfway done with treatments at the Mayo Clinic which include daily radiation treatments Monday through Friday, and weekly chemotherapy treatments. He is in a trial study at the Mayo; his blood was taken last Friday at radiation (treatment number twenty) and he will find out this week if he will be able to discontinue treatment early. If he is able to, he could be done by the end of the month or otherwise it will be December 8th.
Greg and Shauna will be staying in Rochester for the remainder of his treatment at the Hope Lodge. Once Greg completes his treatment he will continue to receive follow-up care from Mayo every three months for the first two years and then once a year for the following three years. Regarding the treatment being done so far away, Shaunna said the drive to Rochester is long, yes, but so worth it. The care Greg has received there is exceptional, she pointed out. Greg is so grateful and thankful for everyone’s gracious and generous support. He said he has the best support group that a person could ask for.
