Arrangements are with the Carlin Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinfuneral.com. A memorial service will be scheduled for friends and family in Washington at a later date.

Verne was born in Trail, Minnesota on March 7, 1931 to parents Victor and Clara Braaten Matson. He married Merelyn Gunderson in January 1952, moved to Seattle and raised four sons, Don, Darrel, Ken and David. Verne and Merelyn had 11 grandchildren and multiple great grandchildren together. They were married 53 years until Merelyn passed away in November of 2004.

Verne then remarried, in December of 2006, to Carol Poppenhagen from Babbitt, Minnesota. Carol had seven children, Lynnea, Denise, Bethany, Kristen, Karmen, Lowell and Lisa. Carol had 18 grandchildren and multiple great grandchildren, which Verne happily added to his family. Verne was married to Carol for 10 years until she passed away in March of 2017.

Verne was in construction most of his life and was a missionary to Africa and India. He had an infectious sense of humor and was always ready with a joke, making friends everywhere he went.

Verne went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 3, 2018 at the age of 87 due to complications from Aplastic Anemia and Pneumonia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Clara Matson; his wives, Merelyn and Carol; his brother, Curt; his sister, Sharon; his son, Darrel; and grandson, Travis Matson.

In addition to his sons and Carol’s family, one brother, Marlowe Matson also survives.

He will leave a big hole in our family but a loving, Godly legacy for us to follow. We’ll see you again in heaven Dad. We love you.
