Services Sunday for Doreen Smith

Doreen Joyce Smith, age 71, of Bagley, MN went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Colleen’s Caring Hands in Bemidji, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Country Faith Church in Clearbrook, MN with the Pastor Larry Dorman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at the Bagley City Cemetery of Bagley, MN. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with the arrangements. 

Doreen was born November 11, 1944 in Bagley, MN, the daughter of Dudley and Norma (Branstner) Shegrud.

They lived in Minerva where she was raised and attended Minerva School, and Bagley High School through 10th Grade. Later she and her parents got their GED together.

Doreen married Gerald Smith on December 30, 1960 in Bagley, MN. They lived in rural Shevlin, MN a short time before moving to Northwood, ND for 6 years and then to the Bagley, MN area where they made their home and raised four Children.

Doreen worked several years in the potato field for her father-in-law, Marvin Smith and also for Gilbert Smith, babysat for several children, employed at H&R Block for over 40 years retiring in 2010 and did Bookkeeping for several people.

Doreen enjoyed going places with her husband, but always brought along a few books to read, as she never knew how long they would be gone. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, whether it was baking, picking berries, shopping or just being with them. One of Doreen’s lifelong dreams came true in 2005, when she and her granddaughter Desirae went to Israel. 

She attended Country Faith Church, where she was treasurer for 20 years. Doreen was a woman of faith, she walked out her Christian life through her devotion to God. She made reading through the Bible and praying for her family and friends a priority. She was actively involved in Care Group and many Bible Studies. She also served on the Board at Camp Dellwater.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gerald of Bagley, MN, daughters Natalie (Jerry) Olson of Bagley, Valerie Wallingford of Bemidji, MN, son Kevin Smith of McEwen, TN, daughter-in-law Sheila Smith of Bagley, MN, 13 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, sister DeeAnn (Bob) Jessee of Detroit Lakes, MN, brother Troy (Bobbi) Shegrud of North Dakota, Owen (Connie) Shegrud of Bagley, MN, sister-in-laws Marilyn Lundmark of Fergus Falls, MN, Debra Wolfe of Forest Lake, MN, numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Kelly Smith, brother Mitchell Shegrud, sister-in-law Carol Shegrud, brother-in-laws Stanley Syverson, Marvid Smith and Duane Lundmark.
