Sherman Oral Tranby was born on June 13, 1930 in McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Selmer and Helga (Engemoen) Tranby. He grew up in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1948.
Sherman entered the United States Army in February of 1952 and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. While in the Army he worked with heavy equipment and eventually was trained to be an instructor for heavy equipment.

Sherman helped his father with, and eventually purchased, Shell Oil in McIntosh which he operated for many years. Sherman’s passion, though, was in road construction. After selling the Shell Oil business, he partnered in his own company, Haagenson-Tranby Construction, and later worked for Thorson Construction out of Bemidji until his retirement. Though he worked on many construction projects, one that was most memorable was working on the Gunflint Trail.
After retirement, Sherman and Pat spent time driving around looking at job sites and enjoying family and friends at their cabin at Twin Lakes.
Sherman enjoyed hunting, fishing, and in his younger years, snowmobiling. He liked collecting cars, a couple of which have been passed to the grandsons.
He was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, volunteer fireman, and “kept the clock” at basketball games in McIntosh for over 25 years.
Sherman and Pat resided together in McIntosh Senior Living. Pat passed away on April 14, 2018 and Sherman passed away there on March 22, 2020.
