Sherman Truman Groven was born at home in Kratka Township on August 22, 1940.  He was the son of Lorraine (Nelson) and Bennie Groven.  He attended country school until entering Goodridge High School his freshman year.  He graduated in 1958.  During his teenage years he worked for farmers in the area.  He also worked for his father on the banks of the Red Lake River at the Highlanding store, selling used cars.  After graduation Sherman moved to Minneapolis and became employed at Honeywell.

On September 14, 1963 he married Jean Wiseth at First Lutheran Church in Goodridge.  They resided in Minneapolis until moving back to the Highlanding area in 1970 where they made their home and raised their children Scott, Shawn, and Sonya.  Sherman spent many hours being involved with his children’s activities.

Sherman was employed at Arctic Cat Enterprises until it closed in 1982.  He then started his dream career with UPS, where he created lifelong relationships.  In 2002 Sherman retired due to health issues from UPS after 20 years of safe driving.

In retirement Sherman never sat still, his nickname was “Squirrel.”  The Squirrel loved to spend hours on end in his garden, sharing his produce with his friends and neighbors.  The outdoors was home to the Squirrel, where he enjoyed snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, wet biking, and taking pontoon rides.  He enjoyed being involved in his grandchildren’s lives, especially the sporting events.  Sherman was their number one fan!

Sherman is survived by loving wife and companion of almost 57 years, Jean Groven of Highlanding, MN; children, Scott (Nichole) Groven of Argyle, MN, Shawn (Rosaline) Groven of Highlanding, MN, and Sonya (Jerry) Peterson of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Madelyn, Katelyn, Jocelyn, Brooklyn, Benjamin, Katerina, Nicholas, Sebastian, and Theodore Groven; foster granddaughter, Kyla Butcher; foster great-grandchildren, Ambrose, Athena, and Attixus Butcher; brother, Eldon (Fern) Groven of Elk River, MN; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends.
