Services for Roland Arthur Klamar

Roland Arthur Klamar, 84, of Gatzke, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND surrounded by his loving family.

 

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla. Burial will be held at Landstad Cemetery at Gatzke.

 

Visitation will be held Monday, March 7, 2016 from 5 - 8 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla, MN, and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

 

Roland Arthur Klamar was born on April 13, 1931 in Rollis Township, Gatzke, MN, to Alma (Lippold) and Arthur Klamar. Roland was the eldest of six children.  He was baptized in 1931 and Confirmed in 1959 in the Lutheran faith at United Lutheran Church, Gatzke, MN.   Roland

received an 8th grade education at Rollis School house. He joined the air force in 1950 and served four years while spending one of those years in Korea. While in the military, Roland started taking flying lessons, received his private pilot’s license and  eventually his private applicators license to use for crop dusting.

 

Roland met Mildred Peterson through a childhood friend of Roland’s and nursing friend of Mildred’s. Mildred accepted a nursing position at a hospital in Ohio and after a few short months of writing back and forth, she would transfer to the hospital in Thief River Falls to be closer to her future husband. In 1959, Roland and Mildred were married at Clara Lutheran Church in Hazel, MN.  They would raise three children on the family farm and only a mile from the original homestead.

 

Roland was active at his church, St. Petri, local community groups (Lions and American Legions) and participated at state levels in political issues he deemed important.  Serving on the Grygla school board and helped to get funding to build a local high school, moving an Elk herd and forming the Minnesota Land Owners Rights Association.

 

Roland loved outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and flying airplanes.  He enjoyed farming the land he grew up on and spending time with his family and friends.

 

Roland is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred; children, Brent (Laurie) Klamar of Gatzke, Merlin (Carol) Klamar of Gatzke, and Julie Klamar (fiancé Matt Smith) of Brooklyn Center;  six grandchildren, Shawn Klamar, Stephanie (Nolan) Buchner, Christopher Klamar (Megan Malwitz),  Kody Klamar, Kyle Klamar and Samarah Smith, and 3 great-grandchildren, Hailey and Blake Buchner and Hunter Klamar. He is also survived by three brothers, Harold (Doris) Klamar, Paul (Laura) Klamar, and Clifford (Mary) Klamar; one sister, Lorraine (Raynold) Monsrud; sister-in-law, Rosie Fulton; brother-in-law, William Peterson, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Kaml; four brothers-in-law; a niece; three nephews and one grandson.
