Nelson “Sonny” LaFerriere ,68, of Bagley, MN died on Sunday, December 3, 2017 surrounded by his family, at the Sanford Fargo Medical Center on Broadway.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Bagley with the Pastor Rick Moore officiating.  Visitation will be on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 with a prayer service at 7:00 at the church and also will be one hour prior to the services at the church. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.

 

Sonny was born on June 1, 1949 the son of Nelse and Dorothy LaFerriere in Bagley, Minnesota.  He graduated from Bagley High School in 1967 and entered the United States Army on July 19, 1968 during the Vietnam War working as a Military Policeman.  While serving our country, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.  He received the rank of SP4 before getting honorably discharged on July 16, 1971. He returned to Bagley working as a Bagley Policeman for 2 years.  Sonny married Ilene Sundbom on April 28, 1973 at Bagley, Minnesota and Sonny worked as a carpenter with his dad.  Sonny and Ilene moved to St. Cloud, and he attended Technical School learning how to repair Tube Televisions and appliances, and worked at Fingerhut.  The couple and their family moved back to Bagley where Sonny worked at the Gilfillan Center and drove bus for Heartland Express from where he retired after 20+ years.  After his retirement in 2014, Sonny went to the grandkids sporting and school events just as he did for his kids when they were growing up.  Ilene and Sonny have lived in their home in Bagley for 42 years.  Sonny was an active member of Calvary Evangelical Free Church, and was involved with the World Wide Ministries, he taught firearms safety and was a Royal Ranger Leader.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, taking weekend camping trips with his family, and snowmobiling.  Sonny did a lot of carpentry projects, such as making vanities, bunk beds, and cribs, all for his kids.   Sonny lived a life of serving the Lord, he was a loving husband and a dedicated father and grandfather.

 

He is survived by his wife Ilene of Bagley, MN

Daughter – Jaime McCauley and her children – Riley, Hunter and Rayelle of Grand Forks, North Dakota

Daughter – Naomi (Josh) Curfman and their children – Morgan, Isaac and Gavin of Fosston, MN

Daughter – Becky (John) Thompson and their children – Harley, Alanna and Jericho of Bagley, MN
Son – Judah (Jandi) LaFerriere and their children – Adrienne and Lindsey of Bagley, MN

Son – Joshua LaFerriere and his children Makenzie and Madison of Shevlin, MN

Son – Seth (Chelsey) LaFerriere and their children – Alex and Jayce of Clearbrook, MN

Half-brother – Albert Norm of Minneapolis, MN

Sister-in-law – Gale LaFerriere of Detroit Lakes, MN

Sister-in-law – Lois LaFerriere of Bagley, MN

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, - Nelse LaFerriere and Dorothy and Marshall Tollefson; 2 brothers – Jim and Donald LaFerriere; Nephew – Mike LaFerriere and great niece Grace LaFerriere.
