Services for Maxine (Mohn) Thorokelson

97, of Golden Valley, MN passed away on Feb 7, 2017.  Memorial service will be Wed, Feb 15 at 11 AM at Calvary Lutheran Church, 7520 Golden Valley Rd.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service. 

 

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Willmar and her daughter Susan Ryan.  She is survived by her son, Peter; grandchildren,  Angie LeVoir and Heather Ryan; great grandchildren, Alex, Hailey, Easton and Fairyn; sister, Phyllis Boatman; sisters-in-law, June Mohn, Grace Jacobs, Mildred Johnson; brother-in-law, Luther Fjelstad. 

 

Maxine Mohn was born in Enderlin, ND on February 15, 1919 to Clara (Munson) and P. Norman Mohn.  The Mohn family moved to Trail in 1924 when Maxine was six years old.  Maxine lived there until she graduated from Gonvick High School in 1937.  She was educated at St. Olaf college which led to her career as a teacher of home economics.  She married Willmar Thorkelson on June 22, 1945.  Golden Valley has been their home since 1951.  Their two children Susan and Peter were an important part of their lives.  Maxine worked for IDS for 25 years.  Maxine’s husband, Willmar Thorkelson , was a religious editor for the Minneapolis Star.  Maxine accompanied him on many work assignments to countries on every continent, except Antarctica.  They attended every World Council of Churches  Convention during his career as a journalist.

 

Until a recent fall, Maxine had been living independently in Golden Valley and enjoying a healthy and active life.  Maxine will be missed by her family and her many friends.
