Services for Margaret Helen Eklund
Margaret Helen Eklund was born on November 4, 1925, to Hans and Anna (Langseth) Zahl in Erskine Minnesota. She graduated from Win-E-Mac High School. Upon graduation Margaret became at stay at home mother, doing day care for a couple of families. Additionally, she spent some time working at the Red Owl grocery store and at Bonnies Floral until retirement.
Margaret married Paul Sabourin on November 28, 1946. The couple lived in Mcintosh, Minnesota and Willistead, North Dakota before moving to Roseau in 1953. Margaret’s husband Paul passed on September 24th 1981. Margaret married Howard Eklund on September 27, 1985. Margaret was an active member of the Women’s Legion Auxiliary and the Women’s VFW Auxiliary. Some of Margaret’s hobbies included bowling, golfing, card clubs, knitting, sewing, and crocheting. She was an active member of the church and always willing to serve. She was diligent about writing in her diary daily, completing crossword puzzles, and playing the piano. There was always an abundance of baked goods, canned goods, and great meals in her home. Margaret loved spending time with her many friends. She was involved with the Four Seasons activities including lefsa, doughnut, and quilt days. Margaret will be greatly missed.
Survived by husband, Howard Eklund; children, Richard (Lynn) Sabourin of Hakensack, MN, Jeanne Bleau, DeAnna (David) Hovda and Dennis (Carolyn) Sabourin all of Roseau. Step-children, Harlan (Sheri) Eklund of Bemidji, MN, Cindy (Jerry) Kracht of High Point, North Carolina, Myrna (Luke) Linnel of Merril, Wisconsin, Valarie (Don) Palmer of Denver, Colorado and Michael Eklund of Roseau. Brothers, Carsten (JoAnn) Zahl and Roger Zahl of Grand Forks, N.D.
Grandchildren, Amanda and Patsy (children of Rick Sabourin), Sharlene, Jason, Melissa, Justin, Alishia and Joshua (children of Jeanne Bleau), Tyler, Tanner and Kelly (children of DeAnna Hovda), Bret and Bridget (children of Dennis Sabourin); Step grandchildren, Adam and Aaron (children of Cindy Kracht), Lukas, Emily and Casey (children of Myrna Linnel), Deanna and Derrick (children of Valarie Palmer) and Skylar (son of Michael Eklund). 27 great-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by parents, Hans and Anna Zahl; sister, Shirley; husband, Paul Sabourin and step mother, Agnes Zahl.
A Funeral Service for Margaret H. Eklund of Roseau, MN will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 10:30AM at Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau, MN. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 5, 2016 from 5-7PM with a 6:30 prayer service at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at Hope Cemetery in Roseau, MN.
Margaret passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the age of 90.
