Services for Lavonne “Mickey” Michele Gurneau Schmunk

“Everlasting Woman”
Lavonne “Mickey” Michele Gurneau Schmunk, 75, of Bemidji, MN died Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Cornerstone Nursing and Rehab in Bagley, MN.
Committal services will be held at1:00pm, Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at the United Lutheran Cemetery in Berner, MN. Arrangements are with the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji.
She was born on November 1, 1944, in Red Lake, MN the daughter of Michael Handy and Frances “Bunty” Gurneau. She was raised by her Mom, and her Dad Winfield Morrison. She was raised and educated in Red Lake where she attended the Mission School. As a teenager she worked in Minneapolis as a Nanny, and at a Nursing Home. After returning north she took a job as a dispatcher in Clearwater County, and then in Red Lake, MN. She became the second ever female police officer on the Red Lake Reservation. With her experience in Law Enforcement she even served for a short time as a Prosecutor in the Red Lake Judicial System. She pursued a career in Health Care, working at the Cass Lake IHS Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the Gonvick Red Hat Ladies, and a member of the American Legion Aux. She enjoyed playing solitaire for hours, going to the Casino, and spending time with her Grandchildren.

Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Relatives.
She was preceded in death by her: father Michael Handy, Mom Frances “Bunty” Gurneau Morrison, Dad Winfield Morrison, her husband LeRoy Schmunk, sister Annette Morrison Mears, brothers Ronald Morrison, Richard John Morrison, William Morrison, Lawrence “Larry” Morrison, William “Billy” King, Son-in-law Gary “Tatanka Chante” Silk, nephews Steven Soukup, Isaac McDermott, and Tony May Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be all of LaVonne’s brothers and sisters.
