Services for Joanne Zahl

Joanne Zahl, age 85, of Winger, MN, died Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, MN.
Joanne Mae Lundin was born on December 16, 1934, to Yngve and Ina (Lind) Lundin.  She grew up on the family farm near Winger where she attended country school.  She later attended McIntosh Public School, graduating with the class 1952.  Joanne was united in marriage to Carsten Zahl in 1954, at Lima Lutheran Church, rural Winger.  In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she worked for many years at the Winger Bank.  During her career, Joanne transferred into the insurance field of banking.  She retired in the late 1990’s from Lindfors Insurance of Fosston, MN.  Joanne was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease.  She remained at home, with the loving care of her husband, until 2018 when she entered the Pioneer Memorial Care Center.
Joanne never shied away from hard work and always kept busy. Whether it was in the garden, sewing, cooking and baking, volunteering, or making each and every holiday special, her hands were never idle for long.   Joanne loved spending time at their lake home on Big Elbow and was an avid fisherwoman.  She also enjoyed playing card games, especially “31” and hosting gatherings for her loving friends and family. Joanne and Carsten traveled extensively over the years and shared many wonderful memories in which they always treasured. She was a prankster, always teasing and joking around. Joanne loved to make people laugh.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carsten of Winger; her daughter, Denise Schultz of Fargo, ND; her son, Dan Zahl of Duluth, MN; six grandchildren: Marlana Zahl, Kelly (Brett) Blindauer, Erica (Richard) Rodriquez, Adam Kubiski, Kayla Schultz and Kelsey Schultz; eight great-grandchildren: Dion, Isabella, Izak, Rocco, Rhiannon, Roman, Kyshen and Ethan; three sisters, Linda (Pete) Haedtke of Cape Coral, Fl, Kathy (Neil) Christiansen of Plymouth, MN, and Darla Jackson of Bemidji, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Yngve and Ina; one brother, Yngve Jr; her stepfather, Art Gulbranson; and many aunts, and uncles.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine for all the loving, wonderful care Joanne received while there.
A Private Memorial Service was held on Friday, June 5, 2020, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Winger, MN. A video recording of the funeral is available on our website. A public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
