Services held for Alma Baalson

Alma (Smeby) Baalson, of Brooten, MN, died January 27, 2019 at the age of 99. Alma Baalson was born March 12, 1919 at Winger, MN, daughter of Ole and  Helmine (Sevatson) Smeby. She was baptized at her rural home due to health problems and confirmed at Calvary in Winger, MN. 
Alma attended the local rural school and graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1936. She completed a correspondence course in accounting. While still in high school she was assistant bookkeeper at Winger Creamery and Winger Coop Oil association. After graduation she was a bookkeeper at Twin Valley Creamery. She was employed by cooperative Auditing Service of Minneapolis as field auditor of cooperatives from 1940 to 1984. She loved her work.
Alma married Verney Evenson of Thief River Falls, MN in 1954 at Calvery Lutheran in Winger, MN. Verney died in 1961, In July of 1976 she married Rev. Elmo Baalson of Morris, MN. They lived at Morris, MN while Elmo was a visitation pastor. In 1984 they moved to Brooten, MN and became members of the Big Grove Church. Elmo died in 1995. 
During their retirement years they did extensive traveling to Hawaii, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Alaska, the Holy Land, Germany, mainland China, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji Island, and Nova Scotia. They also wintered in Texas and Arizona. 
Unforgettable highlights in Alma's life was the trip to the Holy Land in Jerusalem to be able to walk where Jesus walked. Also their trip to mainland China with a group to deliver Bibles to the people and to stand on the Great Wall. 
She was always involved in church activities and offices. She managed the Smeby family farm at Winger, MN for over 30 years. She sold it to her nephew in 1989. She owned a lake home for 35 years where many family gatherings where held. 
Alma is survived by 8 nieces and nephews, 4 step-children, 10 step-grandchildren, and 15 step­-great-grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, brother Sidney Smeby, sister Helen Albrecht, husbands Verney and Elmo, and nephew Stanley Smeby. 
Interment will be in Elim Cemetery rural Winger, MN. With her immediate family and her first husband.
