Services for Eugene “Gene” Leslie Harwood

Eugene “Gene” Leslie Harwood, 90, of Bagley, Minnesota passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Cornerstone Nursing and Rehab Center in Bagley, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, MN with Pastor Mark Olson officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be at the Bagley City Cemetery at Bagley, MN.  The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.

Gene was born on December 2, 1928 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Dallas and Harriet (Fish) Harwood. He was baptized at 10 years old on April 4, 1939 and confirmed on June 25, 1944 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Maddock, ND. He grew up with his family in Maddock, ND in Benson County, until he was 14 when they moved to a farm southeast of Shevlin. He has attended Albert Township School, Augustana Academy in South Dakota, Leeds High School in North Dakota and Bagley High School, graduating in 1951.  Gene entered the United States Army in 1951, serving our country during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953.  When Gene returned home, he met and married Lois Lene on September 18, 1954 at Bagley, Minnesota.  Together they made their homes in Shevlin, Bagley and Owatonna, and finally settling back to Bagley in 1965.  Gene worked for Norris Strandlien at Strandlien Motors and for Art and Joe Amundson at Amundson Texaco Service Station.  He bought the business and renamed it Harwood Oil and managed it for over 20 years.  Gene had a talent for working with wood.  Over the years he made many wood items including toy tractors, Noah’s Ark toys, barns, cars and several other wooden toys.  Gene enjoyed craft work, reading, gardening, golfing, crossword puzzles and card games, especially cribbage.  He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan, and loved attending Bagley High School sporting events.  Deer hunting was another one of Gene’s favorite things to do.  He was a wonderful father and grandpa, always remembering birthdays and anniversaries with a card.  He wrote many letters to his grandchildren as well.  Gene loved his wife and daughters too, and family was very important to him.

Gene is survived by his Daughter - Bonnie (Brad) Borene of Clearbrook, MN and their daughter – Kali (Seth) Flower of Benson, MN

Daughter – Susan (Randy) Sims of Gonvick, MN and children Amy Monson of Waseca, MN and Andrew (Emily) Monson of Waseca, MN along with their children – Addison, Felicity and Nolan.

Son-in-law – David Kern and his children – Mary (Stefan) Wick of Stockton, MO and their children, Isabelle, Veronica, Josephine, Samuel, Rosemary, Caroline, Marcellus, Ava Joy and Eli.

Beth (Alfred) Bulcher of Athens, WI and their children – Maximus, Zoe, Gus, Olivia,  Romulus and Miriam.

Charity Kern of Baxter, MN and her daughter – Cecilia Leuring.

19 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way.

Sister – Ellen Johnson of Bismarck, ND.

Brother – Neil Harwood of Star Prairie, WI.

Sister-in-law – Gertie Harwood of Bagley, MN.

Sister-in-law – Helen Harwood of Tacoma, WA.

Sister-in-law – Mavis (Lene) Almen of Grafton, ND.

Sister-in-law – Janet (Lene) Almen and her husband Larry of Tehachapi, CA.

Sister-in-law – Marlys (Lene) Bear of Dixon, CA.

Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois in 2017, his daughter – Marcia (Harwood) Kern and brothers – Harold, Earl Sr. and Larry.
