Ernest Mostrom, 96, of Trail, MN passed away with his loving family at his side on Tuesday, Nov.21, 2017 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation will be 5 – 8 pm with a 7 pm prayer service on Monday Nov. 27 at Johnson Funeral Home in Thief River Falls, MN and also one hour prior to the funeral.  The funeral will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, Nov. 28th, 2017 at Nazareth Lutheran Church rural Trail, MN with Pastor Jeffery Merseth presiding.  Burial will be at Nazareth Cemetery, rural Trail, MN.

Ernest Aleksander Mostrom was born on July 4, 1921, near Neptune of Hickory Township in Pennington county Minnesota.  He was the youngest child of John and Helen (Arveson) Mostrom, who were both Swedish immigrants.  He attended school at Little Oak Country School and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On January 11, 1945 Ernest was united in marriage to Lorraine Marion Hanson at the home of Cora & Jorgen Oftelie, rural Trail, MN.  The couple made their home on the Mostrom farm in Hickory Township.  They were married for 72 years.

Ernest farmed all of his life, growing small grains while raising dairy and beef cattle.  In his younger years he also worked in construction and helped to build the Gunflint Trail, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and also participated in many other projects with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49.

An honest, principled and hard working man, active and alert to his final days, Ernest was in the hayfield on his 96th birthday on his trusty Oliver tractor.  He was always happiest when he was working with his son Randy, at the daily chores of the family farm. He was a dedicated Minnesota Twins fan, and very much enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.  He was a man of strong Christian faith and was active in his church and community; always willing to help anyone that was in need.

He followed the news and read the newspaper daily even as his eyesight failed.  Ernest was devoted and proud of his family and Swedish heritage.  He had a great (sly) sense of humor and could tell a good story and joke.  His best times were “visiting” over a cup of coffee with friends and family.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Lorraine; children: Phyllis Mostrom of St. Paul, MN, Deborah (Larry Liden) Mostrom of Thief River Falls, MN, Randall (Laura) Mostrom of Trail, MN; grandchildren: John (Susan) Flaagan of St. Paul, MN, Sarah (Brian) Kading of Thief River Falls, MN, Emily (Mike Milinovich) Mugaas of Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren: Cassandra Forest of Seattle, WA, Jordin & Brooklyn Kading of Thief River Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Irene (Clyde) Bendickson of Lavinia, MT; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Hilma Good, Myrtle Gulseth, Cora Oftelie, Ruth Wilson, Clara Peterson, Ida Haugen, William Mostrom, Albert Mostrom, Orben Mostrom and an infant.

May his memory be forever blessed.
