November 29, 1913 – November 16, 2017

Services for Enice Alvina Nordlund, 103, will be held Tuesday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:00p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook, MN. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, rural Clearbrook.

Enice died on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Cornerstone Nursing & Rehab Center in Bagley, MN.

Enice was born November 29, 1913, to parents Tarjei “Tom” and Christine (Brue) Sandland in a log home in Greenwood Township, MN. She was baptized and confirmed her faith at Greenwood Lutheran Church, rural Clearbrook.

She attended Greenwood Country School, walking 2 miles each day to school. In sixth grade, Enice won a Spelling Contest and advanced to the State Spelling Contest in Minneapolis. She graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1932 and attended a year of Normal Training in Bagley to become a teacher. She started her teaching career at the Beard Country School and taught at Leonard, Weme, Shevlin, Eddy, Neving, Lengby, Fosston, Gully and Clearbrook Country/Public Schools.

On June 15, 1946, Enice and Joel Nordlund were united in marriage at Greenwood Church and they made their home on the Nordlund homestead farm in Eddy Township for 53 years. Their first date was at a basket social; Joel bought her basket of food. Following Joel’s death, Enice moved to Brookfield Apartments and later to the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook and past month Cornerstone Nursing & Rehab Center in Bagley.

Enice was known for being a wonderful hostess, cook and baker. She welcomed all into her home, with a smile and wonderful goodies to eat. Her specialties were fresh vegetables with lots of butter, cinnamon rolls, raised donuts, sugar cookies and lefse. The family hosted a foreign exchange student from France and he remarked, “Enice’s meals bring me home”. A compliment from a Frenchman was thought to carry great significance. She was active in her church and served as a 4-H leader for many years. She inspired many, including her children, to work hard and do their best. She loved to garden and cultivated the most beautiful flower and vegetable gardens imaginable. We know today she is enjoying the gardens of Heaven.

Enice’s motto was “No matter what comes my way, I’m going to be happy today.” She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandma and friend to all. She will be in our hearts forever.

Faith in God was very important. The past months her mind was not clear, but she would sing old hymns word for word. Her favorite being “Just as I Am”. Enice’s last words were “Lamb of God, I come, I come.”

She is survived by her children; Ken (Jean) Nordlund of Madison, WI, four sons & their families Peter (Erin), Stephen (Lorraine), Paul (Anya), & Tom; Kelly (Linda Lee) Nordlund of Clearbrook, MN, sons & their families Mike (Ashley) & Sam (Kendall); Kathy (Brian) Brandt of Marshall, MN, sons Erik, & Chris. Great grandchildren; Aiden Brandt, Grant, Jack, Maeve, Ezekiel, Maya, Evan, Tate & Barrett Nordlund. And numerous nephews & nieces.

Enice was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Nordlund; infant daughter, Kristie Marie; her parents, Tom & Christine Sandland; siblings, Odean Sandland, Reuben Sandland, Ruby Baumann, Lester Sandland and Truman Sandland.
