Emilie Genevieve Flatgard was born on January 19, 1939 in Mountain Lake, MN, the daughter of Ingman Anton and Annie Theoline (Larson) Flatgard.  She was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church near Bergen, MN and was confirmed in 1954 at Salem Lutheran Church of rural Oklee, MN.  She attended a country elementary school near Windom, MN and in 1948 moved with her family to Oklee, MN.  Emilie graduated from Oklee High School with the class of 1957 and then took her Teachers Training in Thief River Falls.

On July 11, 1959, Emilie was united in marriage to Jerry Skjerven at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee, MN.  To this union 5 children were born, Michael, Melanie, Kathy, Karen and Jerry.  They eventually settled on a farm in Emardville Township where Emilie lived the rest of her life.

Emilie taught music and worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Plummer Elementary School prior to owning and operating the Homeplate Café and Laundromat from 1974-1984 in Plummer, MN.  She also cooked for 19 years at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls, MN.

Emilie loved her family and friends, and spending time with her grandchildren!  She was always there for their sporting events and enjoyed cheering them on - WHOO, WHOO, WHOO, WHOO!  Emilie enjoyed quilting, baking, polka dancing, playing whist & bingo, and admiring her gazing balls in her flower gardens.  She was always smiling, laughing and led a very social life.  Emilie had an infectious laugh!  With her there was never a dull moment, her personality was fun and energetic.  She had a loving heart and a giving soul.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer where she was active teaching Sunday School, quilting, church choir and Ladies Aid.  She was very active in several other Plummer social groups, too numerous to mention.
