Services for Carsten Zahl

Carsten Zahl, age 91, of Winger, MN, died Sunday, August 9, 2020, at Villa Maria in Fargo, ND.
Cartsten Harold Zahl was born on March 13, 1929, to Hans and Anna (Langseth) Zahl. He grew up on the family farm near Winger, where he attended country school. Carsten later attended McIntosh Public School, graduating with the class of 1947. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Korean War from 1948–1952 and was very proud of his military service. Carsten was united in marriage to Joanne Lundin on November 13, 1954, at the Lima Lutheran Church in Winger. He was employed at the Winger Implement for over 40 years and was admired by many as “the best parts man ever”, knowing farmers from all the surrounding towns.
Carsten had a lifelong passion for woodworking, often harvesting and milling the lumber himself, and creating countless pieces of furniture and cabinetry that were made custom by special request. Countless “Carsten Creations” are still enjoyed in people’s homes near and far. He happily jumped at the opportunity to donate one of his creations to any cause that came across his path. He also donated his time and skills to the Winger American Legion by building and maintaining the crosses posted in memoriam of local veterans. Carsten lovingly made the burial urns for Joanne and himself, which there is no truer act of love. In 1960, Carsten built their cabin on Big Elbow Lake east of Waubun, MN. This was truly their happy place where they spent time year-round. Their mutual love of fishing and outdoor adventures created countless memories centered around their beloved lake home. Carsten lived a full and amazing life, traveled the world and made friends everywhere he went. He was completely devoted to his family, his faith and his fishing, but nothing compared to his love for Joanne. Theirs was such a beautiful love story and as family and friends we were so lucky to have been witnesses and participants in the love they shared. As difficult as it is to say goodbye, there truly is great comfort in knowing these souls have been reunited and are now together for all of eternity.
Carsten is survived by his daughter, Denise Schultz of Fargo, ND; his son, Dan Zahl of Duluth, MN; six grandchildren: Marlana Zahl, Kelly (Brett) Blindauer, Erica (Richard) Rodriquez, Adam Kubiski, Kayla Schultz and Kelsey Schultz; eight great-grandchildren: Dion, Isabella, Izak, Rocco, Rhiannon, Roman, Kyshen and Ethan; one brother, Roger Zahl of Halstad, MN; three sisters: Linda (Pete) Haedtke of Cape Coral, Fl, Kathy (Neil) Christiansen of Plymouth, MN, and Darla Jackson of Bemidji, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Anna; stepmother, Agnes; sisters, Margaret Sabourin Eklund and infant, Shirley; sister-in-law, Margie Zahl; and many aunts and uncles.
A Private Memorial Service was held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 14, 2020, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Winger, MN.
A Public Graveside Committal Ceremony was held for both Carsten and his wife, Joanne, who passed away on May 30, 2020, at the Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Winger immediately following the memorial service.
In memory of Carsten, the family prefers memorials be sent to Calvary Lutheran Church, Calvary Sunday School Program or the Wingers Lions Club.
Please feel free to sign the guestbook, send condolences and view other opportunities which may be available to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
