Services for Calvin Harmoning

Calvin Harmoning of Red Lake Falls, MN passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner Officiating and Deacon John Bruggeman. Burial will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery at Red Lake Falls, MN.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 2, 2018 from 5 – 8 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Cal was born on August 19, 1938, at home in Red Lake Falls Township to Clarence and Elsie (Seeger) Harmoning.  He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls.   Cal attended country School District 63 from Kindergarten through eighth grade and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1956.  He worked at American Crystal Sugar Factory and in 1959 joined the National Guard.  Cal was honorably discharged in 1965. 

On October 30, 1965, he married Susan Melby at St. Francis Zavier Church in Oklee, MN.  They made their home in Red Lake Falls until 1968 when they moved to the family farm.  Cal raised grain, dairy, pigs, chickens and beef and in 1995 went to work for Red Lake County Coop as an applicator and propane deliveryman.  He retired in 2010. 

Cal and Susan became parents of Joel in 1967, Beth in 1971, Kurt and Joseph in 1972 and Heidi in 1977. Cal was a man of great faith, always a farmer and caretaker of livestock and he loved sharing his garden produce.  He also enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, traveling, reading about WWII, gopher trapping, bird watching, visiting and spending time with grandchildren.

Cal was active in Knights of Columbus, National Farmers Organization as a county president and a state and national delegate, Dairy Herd Improvement Association secretary, American Legion, Farmers Union and as a church usher.  Cal was also a very strong prolife advocate—working many hours to help the Live Care Pregnancy Center in Thief River Falls.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Susan;  children – Joel (Linda); Beth (Steve) Butcher all of Franklin, MN; Kurt (Carmen) and Heidi (Steve) Nelson of Red Lake Falls,  Grandchildren Brooke (Colin) Jackson, Dakotah, Blake, Isabella, Hallie, Grace, and Jacob Harmoning.  Great grandson Parker, brother Robert, brothers-in-law Allan, David, Michael, Robert, and John Melby; sisters-in-law Mary (Don) Rindahl; Rebecca (Dale) Svaren, and Carolyn (Roy) Rystad); aunts Marilyn Seeger and Lois Seeger and sister-in-law Judy Melby.

Preceding him in death were his son Joseph in 1972, mother Elsie in 1960 and his father Clarence in 1975; his brother Harlan in 1958 and brother-in-law Richard Melby in 2014, sister-in-law Lola Harmoning in 2015.
