Bert was born February 2, 1925 in Ivanhoe, MN, to Martin and Mary (Willman) Amundson.  He was baptized and confirmed at Hemnes Lutheran Church in rural Minneota, MN.  He attended rural schools in Lincoln County, MN and graduated high school in 1943.  He worked the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army, serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Alaska from 1950-52.

Bert began his career in the banking industry at age 27, and held several positions all over Minnesota, most notably as a bank examiner for 87 banks in 5 states, and as Vice President of American State Bank, Grygla, MN.  For a few years in the early 80’s he owned and operated Bert’s Market in Plummer, MN.  He and Gladys lived in Grygla, MN for 29 years and during that time, he retired from the bank in 1990 and worked part-time at the Grygla Co-op Store.  They were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla, MN as well as Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls.

Bert married his first wife, Mary Lee Strand, in 1953.  They had 2 children, Brent and Kimberly, and were married for 17 years.  In 1975, Bert met Gladys (Fredrickson) Borsheim and they married on October 23, 1976.  Through this marriage, he gained a stepdaughter, Lynette (Borsheim) Dennis and step-son, Murray Borsheim.  His family grew to include many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Bert loved to spend time with his loved ones, family and friends alike.  He enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, and tending to his garden.  Many hours were spent in his woodworking shop on special projects for others.  He knew every bird he saw and could whistle you their song.  He belonged to the American Legion and Lions Club and was a very active member of his community.  Any time a volunteer was needed, he was happy to lend a hand.  He dedicated lots of time driving veterans and neighbors back and forth to out of town appointments.  If you knew Bert, you were surely served a cup of coffee and cookies by Gladys while he told you one of his many stories of memories he held dear to him.

Bert was preceded in death by his brothers Melvin and Henry Amundson; sister, Juliet (Amundson) Peterson and son, Brent Amundson.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Amundson; daughter, Kimerly Luoto; stepdaughter, Lynette Dennis; stepson, Murray (Laurie) Borsheim; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; sister Lona Van Deelan; 3 sisters-in-law, Hazel Amundson, Merlyn Perreault and Clarice Wilcox.
