Services for Bernice Harriet (Lunning) Anderson

Bernice Harriet (Lunning) Anderson passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Bernice was born on December 8, 1929 in Gonvick, Minnesota to Heio and Beret (Dolalie) Lunning. She and her brother Harvey grew up on a large farm in northern Minnesota and after graduating high school, went to Bemidji State College to get her teaching degree. She started out teaching grades 1-12 in a one-room schoolhouse. She later moved to Minneapolis where she taught grades 4-6 for the next 30 years. Bernice adored teaching and was well-loved by her students.

She married John Roland Anderson on August 1, 1963 after he retired from the Navy and they moved to the house on Eagle Lake that John and his father had built. Even though Bernice preferred not to swim, she loved living on the lake. They later moved to another house across the lake that they remodeled, where they lived for the next 20 years. After Bernice and John retired, they moved to Sartell, Minnesota and bought a house in Florida where they were able to spend the winters. They still returned to her parent’s farm in northern Minnesota for the summers, where they enjoyed remodeling the farm house.

  Bernice will be laid to rest next to John at United Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gonvick, Minnesota next to a row of lilac bushes reminiscent of the lilacs they both enjoyed so much at the lake.

Bernice is survived by her daughter Kim and son-in-law Jan Wagaman, grandson Austin Wagaman and wife Leah, and grand-daughter Taylor Wagaman, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is also survived by her daughter Brenda and son-in-law Pat Cummings, grandson Brandon Wiley, and grand-daughter Kristy and husband TJ Spaanem, all of Aitkin, Minnesota, along with two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother.

A funeral service was held April 10, 2018.  Burial will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at United Lutheran Cemetery Gonvick, MN.
