Services for Avis Sandland,

Avis Sandland, 91, of Clearbrook, MN died on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook, MN.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook, Minnesota with the Reverend Adam Krog officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 15 from 4:00 – 6:00 at the Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook with a prayer service at 5:00 pm and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clearbrook, MN. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.

 

Avis was born on June 24, 1926 at Clearbrook, Minnesota the daughter of Anton and Thilda (Nelson) Lindom.  She was baptized at the Berner Lutheran Church.  After her mother’s death when Avis was 4, a loving family from North Dakota, John and Lizzie Iverson, took her in and she lived with them until she was 18.  Avis attended Hoff Elementary school and was confirmed at the Hoff Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Lankin High School in 1943 and attended Mayville Teachers College.  She taught at a Country School for a year in North Dakota.  Avis met Truman Sandland and they were married on June 16, 1945.  Avis taught at Greenwood Township School for 2 years.  She and her husband farmed from 1945 – 2012.  Avis also Substitute taught for several years at the Clearbrook School.  Avis was a member of the Elim Lutheran Brethren Church of Clearbrook, the Mission Friends and was the Sunday School Superintendent.  She served as the church organist and soloist for many years.  She was a member of the Clearbrook School Board, the Clearwater Quilters Guild, the Red Hat Ladies and she was a 4-H Leader for the Leon Ramblers.  Avis enjoyed quilting, singing and playing piano.  She loved to write, she was proud of her Norwegian Heritage which included two trips to Norway.  Avis was a good cook and canning produce was an obsession.  100 Quarts of dill pickles was always her goal. She was well-known for her wild rice bread, her lefse and her donuts.  Avis was never happier than when she had her family around her.  Many summer evenings were spent at Clearwater Lake. Holiday gatherings were always full of aunts, uncles, cousins and anyone who needed a family that day.  She probably brewed more than 75,000 pots of coffee in her married life. 

 

Avis is survived by her daughters, Doreen (Warren) Bardwell of Gonvick, MN and Eva Joy (Bruce) Lund of Staples, MN.  Her sons – Dale (Susan) Sandland of Eau Claire, WI and John (Susan) Sandland of Gonvick, MN; Her sister – Alice Ramsrud of Bagley, MN; Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great great grandchildren; Ann (Chris) Bardwell – Ross and their children - Adam and Siri-Anna; LeeAnn (Scott) Bakke and their children -  Brennan (Brooke) Bakke; Megan (Paul) Gustafson and their children -  Parr and Kye.  Ron (Jeni) Bardwell and their children - Cole and Blake; Jack (Jill) Lund and their children – Sam, Kellan and Anika; Daniel (Solveig) Lund and their children - Oskar and a newborn girl; Peter (Jessica Scherer) Lund; Krista (Greg) Johnson and their children -  Connor, Brianna, Caleb, Nick and Anna; Alissa (Mike) Amundson and their children – Dylan and Aleah; Nathan (Allison) Sandland and their children – Kaitlyn, Kyle and Cole; Travis (Jay Fuchs) Sandland.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents;  her husband Truman; Grandson – Alan Bardwell; Sister – Ruth Roed; Brothers – Alvin Iverson, Elmer Iverson and Orville Iverson.
