Arvid Donald Engdahl, known to all as Don or Donny, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Monday, August 15, 2022 at Sanford Hospital in Bemidji, MN.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.
Don was born on February 9, 1927 in Leonard, MN to Arvid Engdahl and Betty Nelson. He had five siblings: Norris, Wallace, Devona, Edla and half-sister, Gladys. Don attended school at Happy Hollow Country School and then graduated from Clearbrook High School. He continued his education at Bemidji State Teachers College, where he acquired his degree after serving in the United States Navy during World War II, from which he was honorably discharged. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a merchant marine. With his degree he taught in one-room rural school houses in eastern Montana and North Dakota for many years; after which, he worked as a DHIA supervisor. During his tenure with the DHIA he also dedicated his time, along with his wife Joann, to breed and raise Morgans, Clydesdales and Collies at his farm. He continued working as a custodian at Itasca State Park for a few years, then he decided to employ his time in up-keeping his farm, which he loved so much.
Don is survived by his daughter Gayle Ballek from his first marriage to Edna Anderson, by his son Arvid J. Engdahl from his second marriage to Joann Marie Brothers, by his youngest sister Edla Ridley Hoffert, numerous nieces and nephews, and by his dear friend Carol Satterfield.
Don was preceded in death by his wives Edna and Joann, his parents Arvid and Betty, his half sister Gladys, his brothers Norris and Wallace, sister Devona, his grandson Jimmy Ballek, and his niece Robin Gunning. Don, known for his gentle, humble and quiet nature, will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
