Alice Muriel was born to Trygve and Florence (Kohls) Labraaten on April 24, 1941 in Madison, MN. She grew up in the Madison area with her older sister and younger brother. There she attended and graduated from the Madison High School in 1959.
After graduation from high school, she attended and graduated from Moorhead State College with a B.S. in Elementary Education and Music in 1963. She also later received her license in adult education.
Following college, Alice taught first grade in Wheaton (63-65), MN, Marshall (65-66), MN and elementary music in Pelican Rapids, MN, beginning in 1966.
While teaching in Pelican Rapids, she met a young intern named Paul Knutson who just happened to live in the apartment next to her. They were married on June 16, 1968 in Garfield, MN.
She and Paul moved with their son and daughter to Clearbrook in 1976, where she took a break from full-time teaching. She kept herself busy with her kids, substitute teaching, and teaching GED classes. She also taught piano for most of her adult life.
Alice returned to teaching elementary school full time in 1988 in the Clearbrook school and later moved to the Title 1 classroom in the Clearbrook-Gonvick school.
Alice dedicated much of her time to Good Shepherd Church in Clearbrook, MN, where she played both organ and piano for services and numerous other church happenings. She was a part of and directed the church choir. She was also a member of the handbell choir, the worship committee, the library committee, the call committee and the WELCA.
Alice retired from teaching in 2003. However, she remained active in the school system supervising testing, co-chairing the book fairs and volunteering her time to help the Title 1 classroom move when the new school was built. She was also active in Delta Kappa Gamma. Alice took the time to do some traveling with family after retirement, with the highlight being a trip to Norway, where she got to see where her father came from.
Alice was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved spending time with her family and the family of friends that she made throughout her lifetime, including the lifelong friends she made in Madison, Wheaton, and Marshall and the new family of friends she found in Pelican Rapids and Clearbrook. Along with her passion for teaching and music, Alice also loved reading, helping others, and watching a good Hallmark movie.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother- Florence; her father – Trygve; her step-mother - Mabel; her sister - Mavis, and several aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her son - Chad Knutson of Minneapolis, MN; daughter - Kara Knutson (Scott Stohlberg) of Cloquet, MN; brother - Dick (Bev) Labraaten of Bemidji, MN; brother-in-law - Clayton Olson of Milbank, SD; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
