Obituary for Lester Fred Sundquist

Lester Fred Sundquist, at the age of 82, entered into eternal rest on February 26th, 2022 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4th at United Lutheran Church in Berner, MN with visitation 1 hour before the service. 

Lester was born on February 1st, 1940 to Fred and Myrtle Sundquist. He was a member of United Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He attended school in Gonvick, MN and helped on the family farm. He then married Jean Johnson on September 20th, 1958 and they raised 6 children. They continued to live in the Gonvick area while he spent one season working on the ore boats on the Great Lakes. After that, they moved to Minneapolis and he worked for Barton Construction for many years. In the 1960's, they purchased a farm near Berner. He worked for Northern Pipeline company for several years before transferring to Murphy Bros. out of Illinois. This job brought him to many states, where his wife Jean was able to accompany him in the last few years, before retiring in 2002. After retirement, his love for driving truck led to jobs hauling sugar beets as well as grain for a local farmer. 

He loved spending time deer hunting with his sons, and a humorous story about that is he thought he had to shoot every deer he saw, so they said next year he was only getting one bullet. He also was a member of a snowmobiling club with friends and neighbors participating in many rides as a group. Knowing his love for ice fishing, his children surprised him with a spearing house in honor of his retirement. Time spent catching and frying fish with his brother, sons, and friends was priceless. In other times of the year, he enjoyed driving around in the golf cart with his son Steve, taking summer pontoon rides with Lisa and her family and taking trips to various places with his wife. He will be remembered by his loved ones for his witty sense of humor, his joy of reminiscing about the good old days and for his willingness to be there and help others. 

Lester is survived by his wife Jean Sundquist of Fosston, MN, children: Kevin (Tia) Sundquist of Marengo, IL, Darren (Nancy) Sundquist of Gonvick, MN, Craig Sundquist of Gonvick, MN, Lisa (Shane) Schroeder of Faribault, MN; 6 grandchildren: Scott (Sarah) Sundquist of Genoa, IL, Dustin (Melisa) Sundquist of Huntley, IL, Nicholas Sundquist of Fosston, MN, Jessica Sundquist (Kris Chilton) of Twin Valley, MN, Jade Schroeder of Westminster, CO, and Braden Schroeder of Faribault, MN; and 6 great-grandchildren. Also, 1 brother Raymond (Carol) Sundquist of Gonvick, MN and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Walter and David Sundquist, 2 sons Kelly and Steven Sundquist and many other family members.
