Services for Laverne “Spike” Donald Halvorson

Laverne “Spike” Donald Halvorson, 89 of Bagley, passed away on December 11, 2021 at Sanford Medical Center in Bagley.
Laverne was born September 14, 1932 at his home place, in Popple Township, to parents Clarence and Mary (Holm) Halvorson. Laverne attended country school, also in Popple Township. Laverne was a lifetime member of Zion of Eddy church of rural Bagley where he was baptized, confirmed and helped keep the country church going.
Laverne married Dianna Sutherland in 1957 they later divorced. Laverne married Donna Ranisate on April 8, 1961. They had three children: Ronald, Gail and Penny.
Laverne and Donna spent many hours in the kitchen making delicious cakes and breads. They were known for their baked goods. With Donna’s instructions and gentle reminders, they made wonderful goodies which Laverne loved as he was also well known for his major sweet tooth.
Laverne served in the US Army from June 1953 until May 1955. During his time in the Army, he was part of the US 25th Infantry and was stationed in South Korea. After discharge, Laverne worked a number of different jobs from carpentry, labor at the potato house and the lumber mill in Bagley and making crates at Arctic Cat in Clearbrook. He purchased his farm, which adjoined his home place where he was born, and then starting farming. It was then that he started his true passion of being a dairy farmer.
When he could no longer milk cows, he continued to raise beef cattle. One of the hardest things he did was sell all his cattle. To the end, he wanted to go check on his cows. When he was no longer farming, Laverne could be found riding down the road on his bicycle, for exercise. He put many miles on his old pedal bike. Laverne enjoyed spending time with his AMPI fellow farmers. Laverne was very proud of his membership, of 68 years, in the American Legion Irvin Blix Post #16 of Bagley. He enjoyed going to the monthly meetings, having supper and good visiting at the Bagley Legion.
Laverne is survived by his son-  Ronald (Becky Yocum) Halvorson of Clearbrook; daughter - Gail (Mike) Maruska of Bagley and son-in-law, David Long of Laporte.
