Lions Club hosts District Governor

The Gonvick Lions Club hosted the 5M11 District Governor Gérald Fontaine from St. Pierre Jolys, Manitoba at a recent meeting.
He and his wife Élaine intend to visit all of the 65 Lions Clubs that make-up District 5M 11 during  his year as the District Governor. There are 20 clubs in South Eastern Manitoba and 45 clubs in North Western Minnesota. 
On his visit he also presented awards that the club had earned during the year. They included District Governor Awards to Club President Lion Chris Eck, Club Secretary Corrine Richards and Club  Treasurer Lion Jonathan Solberg.  He presented a 10-year Monarch Chevron to Jonathan Solberg, 25-Year Monarch Chevron to John Hellquist and 40 year Monarch Chevron to Richards Richards. The club also received the Centennial Service Challenge Banner Patch Level 2.  The banner was earned on completion of projects and reporting of activities though MyLCI in service areas of Youth, Vision, Hunger and Environment. 
Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world. There are over 1.4 million members in 210 countries around the globe. The International President D. Jitsuhiro Yamada stresses the theme which is Dignity, Harmony and Humanity. He tells that... “We have shown time after time that national boundary lines are nothing more than dots on a map.” “In spite of conflicts throughout the world, we work beyond differences.”
Lions help by sending money to Lions Clubs in various countries to help with Lions led relief efforts. They have been active in refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon and Syria. Doctors Without Borders who helped contain the Ebola Epidemic in Africa. Recently they have sent emergency relief for Japan and Ecuador earthquakes, responding to the major flooding in Austin, Texas and a Major Catastrophe Grant to the Canadian Lions to provide assistance to the wild forest fire victims and evacuees of Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta.
He went on to thank the Gonvick Lions Club for its dedicated community service since 1975.
