This year’s Triple “A’ award was given to Marie Johnson from the Red Lake County Central High School. The three A’s in Triple “A” stand for Academics, Arts and Athletics. The program’s purpose is to recognize and honor seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the fine arts. To be eligible for this award a student must be a senior at the time of nomination and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the date of nomination. They must participate in League-sponsored athletics and fine arts activities. They also must comply with the MSHL’s Student Code of Conduct.
Johnson is a senior who has been in Online Collage Courses since her sophomore high school year. She plans on graduating from Northland Community and Technical Collage in May with her Associates of Arts degree around the time she graduates from high school.
She has participated in band and attended a solo contest in her sophomore year where she received an excellent rating. Johnson was chosen by her director, Mrs. Patty Mickelson, to attend the Honor’s Band at Northland Community and Technical Collage because of her participation in band and good grades.
Johnson has played varsity level basketball since her freshman year in high school. Johnson says she has improved skills such as how to be a team player not only on the court to her teammates, but also off the court and demonstrate leadership. This year she was a team captain on the basketball team. Johnson says that being a captain has really taught her how to be a leader and how to be there for her team.
“Not only has being involved in arts, athletics and academics made me a better musician, student or athlete, but it has made me a better person. I strongly believe that being involved in high school activities can shape how a person develops and grows outside of high school. In order to sound good in music, you have to work together with a group of people. In real life, you have to work together with other people to reach common goals. Basketball has also taught me teamwork, but it has also taught that in order to get something done you have to work hard. In academics, I have to make sure that all of my homework is in on time, which has taught me to have good time management,” said Johnson in reference to how the arts, athletics, and academics has helped her develop as a person.
The Triple “A” Award Recognition Ceremony will be held during the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in March. The top two award finishers from each region will be invited to the banquet. League officials will announce the four Triple “A” Award recipients at the banquet. Award recipients, a girl and a boy from both a Class A and Class AA schools, will receive a four-year scholarship.
