Dr. Lisa Newland, a 1990 graduate of Gonvick-Trail High School and daughter of Kathy Ollestad of Gonvick, was a guest lecturer at Cape Town, South Africa.
She gave some brief thoughts and comments on her stay.
In general my impressions were that:
1) the SA people are incredibly friendly, hospitable, and honored to have others visit their beautiful county
2) It was much safer there than I was led to believe (except the Johannesburg airport, which felt scary, lots of armed guards everywhere), and
3) the aftershocks of decades of apartheid are still reverberating throughout the country. Its heartbreaking to see so many people still living in poverty with few options for rising above their circumstances.
On the other hand, after seeing the prison on Robben Island (where the political prisoners including Mandela were held) its truly miraculous that they have made such huge strides to curb prejudice and spread peace and opportunity. It is most definitely still a country in the process of healing.
Thoughts from Dr. Newland, “So far the trip has been wonderful! All of my flights were good and I sat next to very friendly people. However I'm not in Kansas anymore Toto. Lots and lots of armed guards everywhere at the airport. And bomb/drug/food sniffing dogs. The highlight of my trip was that I was stopped by one! Its probably my own fault for smiling at a pair of them and their handlers. I couldn't help it. They are beagles, and so darn cute! So one picked up a scent and gave his handler the sign, so the guard chased me down. He asked if I had food in my bag. I said yes, snacks like nuts and protein bars. Would you like to see them? He said no that's ok. I just had to check because the dog gave me the sign for food. I said ok. They are so cute! He said yes. I asked if I could pet him (the dog obviously ). I got a flat No! Hmmmmph!”
