Minnesota voters are deciding this fall whether schools should get more money from a state trust fund. The constitutional amendment would increase payouts from the Permanent School Fund. The fund was established in 1858 with proceeds from the sale of timber and minerals. Supporters say the change could give districts more flexible funding without raising taxes. Advocates are trying to raise awareness of the amendment because ballots with the question left blank will be counted as no votes against the proposal.

Weekend Fire In Northern Township Claims Victim Just after 3a.m. Sunday, September 20 the Bemidji Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in Northern Township, approximately seven miles north of Bemidji. Initial reports indicated that one occupant had escaped from the residence and another remained unaccounted for. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-wide mobile home engulfed in flames. The first-arriving firefighters attempted to enter the home but were unable to do so because of the fire conditions. As crews brought the fire under control, they entered the home and located the unaccounted-for occupant, who was deceased, inside the home. A total of 29 firefighters and 11 pieces of equipment operated on the scene for approximately two hours. The home and its contents are considered a total loss. One civilian was injured; information regarding that individual’s condition is not being released at this time. The fire appears to be accidental in nature but remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division.

A Minnesota man is facing federal charges for allegedly shooting a firefighting plane. Prosecutors say Daniel Christian Pettit fired at the aircraft as it scooped water from Kjostad Lake during a wildfire on May 15th. Pettit allegedly told investigators he was hunting crows when a round struck the plane’s rudder. The pilot heard a popping noise, but didn’t discover the damage until landing in Hibbing. Pettit is being held without bail and is scheduled for a detention hearing and arraignment on Wednesday.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says investigators believe alcohol contributed to a rollover crash involving a semi tractor-trailer that was transporting large railroad ties last week in Embarrass Township. According to deputies, the 58-year-old driver from Blackduck told them that just before midnight, a vehicle pulled out in front of him, causing him to lose control of the semi and swerve into the ditch, where it overturned. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for a minor head injury, and the sheriff’s office says that his name will not be released until a formal charging decision has been made.
A Minnesota State Patrol commercial vehicle inspector is investigating the crash.
