Arthur Melvin Lanman of Bloomington, MN passed away on March 11, 2024. He is survived by his daughters Catherine Lanman and Jacalyn Wells, his son Charles Lanman (Michelle), his sister Doris Winters, his 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Kathleen, parents Verney and Edith Lanman, his son Ronald Lanman, his brother Revere Lanman, and grandson Benjamin Lanman.
Arthur grew up and went to grade school in Gully MN and graduated from Fosston High School in 1946. Arthur’s journey of service began at sixteen years old in the summer of 1944, as he answered the call of duty during a crucial period in history. Arthur began working at the shipyard at Swan Island in Portland, Oregon, demonstrating his work ethic and dedication.
In June 1946, at the age of 18, Arthur enlisted in the United States Navy, eager to serve his country. He was assigned to the USS St. Paul, where he served with distinction in the China and Japan area. Arthur's role as a helmsman and a battle station rammerman in #2 turret showcased his courage and commitment to duty during this critical post-World War II period. Arthur's service extended beyond his assigned duties; he drove a jeep while in port in China and was recognized for his contributions with the World War II Victory Medal. As a proud member of the American Legion, Arthur honored his fellow veterans and supported their causes with unwavering dedication.
Arthur graduated from Dunwoody Institute in 1950, setting the stage for a successful and fulfilling career. Throughout his professional life, Arthur displayed exemplary dedication and expertise, becoming a respected member of the Pipefitters Union 539 and achieving the distinguished honor of a 50-year certificate membership in the Refrigeration Service Engineer's Society. Arthur was deeply involved in the refrigeration community, dedicating his time and energy to various organizations and causes. After retirement, he enjoyed participating in the Fazed Out Fitters and serving as Secretary for the organization for several years. He served as a member of the Minneapolis Examining Board for Refrigeration for a decade, contributing his expertise to uphold standards of excellence in his field.
In 1952, Arthur married the love of his life, Kathleen McSorley. Arthur and Kathleen shared a passion for travel, exploring the world together before and after retirement. Summers were spent boating with family and friends, playing bocce ball, and taking care of the family home and yard. Arthur and Kathleen particularly enjoyed wintering in the southwest, where they did plenty of hiking and exploring.
Arthur Melvin Lanman leaves behind a legacy of commitment to his family and his profession. Arthur’s celebration of life will be held at Gill Brothers Funeral Home at 9947 Lyndale Ave S, Bloomington, MN 55420 on Thursday, March 14 from 5pm to 8pm with a military service at 8:45am on Friday, March 15 at Fort Snelling Cemetery.
