Anthony Ronald Ness, the son of Elmer and Myrtle (Norquist) Ness was born on August 20, 1929 on the family farm north of Gully MN, where he attended school in the area and graduated from Gonvick High School in 1947. He worked on the farm until entering the United States Army in 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He frequently reminisced about his service in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria where he held many fond memories of driving tanks on the Autobahn. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and moved to the Minnesota Iron Range. In 1956, he took a position as a railroad mechanic for Reserve Mining Company in Babbitt MN.
On May 6, 1961, Tony married his sweetheart Elaine Fjerstad at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Gully. They established a home in Embarrass where they lived, worked, and raised their family. Tony continued with the Reserve Mining Company for over 30 years until the company closed. Tony then attended Brainerd Vo-Tech School where he received certification in small engine repair. He worked several years for a local repair shop until he was called back to the mine to serve as a consultant. Following Elaine’s passing in 2005, Tony continued to call Embarrass home until he was no longer able to live alone.
Tony loved the outdoors, nature, blue skies and water, green trees, and grass. Anything outdoors was an enjoyable pastime for Tony. He trapped, fished, hunted and cut and sold lots of lumber on his property over the years. He loved trees and made sure that his children could see their beauty by transplanting many trees into their yards. He loved gardening and was always happy to share his produce. But indoors or outdoors, Tony loved people. He never said no to any need his family had, and he was that friend you could always count on to lend a helping hand. He wasn’t afraid of adventure, trying something new, which was evident when he went back to school at age 58.
Tony enjoyed membership in the Babbitt American Legion for many years. But most of all, Tony treasured spending time with his children, grandchildren, and other dear relatives and good friends. His family was his pride and joy.
Tony is survived by his children Ryan (Gail) Ness, Mounds View MN and Lorinda Kompelien (Mark Spitzack) of Laporte MN; daughter-in-law Denise Ness of Red Lake Falls MN; grandchildren (Aaron’s) Zachary (Stephanie) Ness, Jake (Hailey) Ness, Ben Ness, (Ryan’s) Derek Ness, Jared Ness, (Lorinda’s) Andrea (Cody) Kasper, Erik (Breanna) Kompelien, Karl Kompelien; great grandchildren Mari, Oli, Teddy, Charlie, Elena and Elias; siblings Eleanor Martin, Starbuck MN, Myra Coiner, Bemidji MN and Basil Ness, Fergus Falls MN and many nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine, son Aaron Ness, son-in-law Jeff Kompelien, infant brother Warren and his in-laws Peter and Lillian Fjerstad.
