Larry Carroll Broin, age 88, of New Rockford, ND, passed away on Sunday, March 3rd, 2024, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. After a long fight with cancer, he died peacefully with his loving family by his side.
Larry was born to Leander and Cora (Clausen) Broin on August 1st, 1935, at their farmstead outside of Gonvick, MN. Larry was the second of six children.
After graduating from Gonvick High School in 1953 he worked at various jobs including at a taconite mill on the Minnesota north shore and at a smelter in Great Falls, MT.
Larry joined the US Marine Corps at age 18 in May 1954. He attended basic training in San Diego. After basic training he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, where he drove military semi-trailer trucks. During his two years of active duty, Larry was stationed on the Japanese island of Okinawa where he was assigned to assist collecting insect samples and testing for insect-borne disease.
After eight years in the Marine Corp, he moved back to Minneapolis. It was in Minneapolis in 1963 that he met the love of his life, Beverly Arneson. They were married on January 3, 1964, and were blessed with three children - fraternal twins Jeanette and Annette in 1964 and Darrin in 1967.
In the early 1970s they moved to Billings, MT, where Larry worked repairing semi tanker trailers and forklifts. Larry later began his first job as a member of the Teamsters Union, driving cement mixer for Quality Concrete.
While in Billings, Larry joined the local Naval Reserve unit of the Seabees. In 1979 Larry served his annual two-week training on the Pacific Island of Midway.
In 1979 Larry and the family moved to New Rockford, ND to be closer to family. He drove grain semi- trailers for Farmers Equity Elevator.
In 1985, after their children graduated from High School, Larry and Beverly moved back to Billings. Larry returned to work repairing road oil tankers. Then with Interstate Brands (aka Sweetheart Bakery) as a transport driver to areas in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
When Larry retired in 1997, he and Beverly moved back to New Rockford. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren) and doing various woodworking projects from building furniture to making lawn ornaments. He was a proud Marine and in his later years could always be seen wearing his Marine Corp hat and jacket.
