A special moment of true sportsmanship on the football field

Last Thursday afternoon, the Charger’s hosted Northern Freeze on the football field in Goodridge. It was a great game with the Charger’s getting the win, which meant hanging on to the Lake Agassiz Duck Traveling Trophy between the two teams, but the real victory happened at the beginning of the game. David Schoon is a student manager for the Northern Freeze football team. Attending every game in uniform, last Thursday David dressed in pads and took to the field. That special moment to celebrate David and the teams’ camaraderie happened with a ceremonial play at the beginning of the game, allowing David to score a touchdown! David also plays baseball on the Freeze cooperative which includes Northern Freeze, Tri-County and Grygla. It was a special moment for everyone, but especially David.
Jeff Lund, Marshall County Central School’s Superintendent/Elementary Principal, issues the following statement: “I personally want to thank everyone involved, especially our coaches, your coaches, and all our student athletes. I appreciate having the friendships and camaraderie with your schools. It makes us all stronger and it’s a great example of what our communities’ future can be seeing these kids come together to make moments like this. We are a young football squad who had a few missing players this week. The Goodridge/Grygla boys were great sports. The G/G coaching staff took their foot off the gas and let the younger guys get some playing time which helped us when we were down some numbers. That on top of the special moment for David was incredible.”
Four years ago, the Lake Agassiz Duck was established as a traveling trophy between the two schools. With the 40-12 score in favor of Goodridge/Grygla, the duck will go back into the Charger’s trophy case for now!
