Clearbrook-Gonvick School will host student council summit March 27

CleArbrook-Gonvick School board met on Monday, March 18. Item that was brought up at the meeting was looking for an estimate on just locks for the lockers. They would not be able to be taken off the locker.
Mr. Bettin gave his Spotlight on Education. I Love to Read Month was well attended. Students each received one free book from the district. Mrs. Faldet's second grade class was making crystal snowflakes. Ms. Larson's World Literature class was reading "All Quiet on the Western Front." Mrs. DeVries class had a unit on chocolate and they were baking in the old Home Ec room. Personal math class was investigating debt. 188 students from various schools will meet for the get together. Three students are on the board and 5 are running for the board from the district. Mrs. Goudge and two of her students Luke Johnson and Presley Westrum gave an update on River Watch.
Principal's Report
Josh Tharaldson gave his report. March 27th there will be no school and there will be staff in-service. This is due to the regional student council summit at Clearbrook-Gonvick. There will be staff training for the upcoming MCA tests and time for teachers to collaborate related to curriculum and finalizing grades from the third quarter. During the afternoon, paras will participate in training with Amy Mulry.
MCA testing for grade 3 to 6 and 7th, 8th and 10 grade will have to be done before Friday, May 10th.
They are planning to have summer enrichment starting June 4th to July 27th for K-6 students. They will meet 3 days a week for 3 hours each day for an incentive based field trip at the end. Focus will be on math, reading and social emotional learning. They are working on getting staff to fill the positions.
Preschool screening was held. Staff and nursing services and head start were busy doing the screening.
Prom with Mrs. Mendick and Ms. Larson is set for April 20. Pictures will be taken in the gym from 5 to 7 pm. The Grand March will be in the gym at 8:00 pm. The usual after prom will also be held. They will be staying at the school with no drive time. There will be light snacks and a DJ for the dance.
There will be no school March 29th and April 1 for Spring Break. April 4th is a Blood Drive at the School. April 11 will be High School parent -teachers conferences from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
Superintendent Report
They are still looking for custodians and cooks. John Heller started on the 2 to 10 pm custodian shift. Softball and baseball started. All Districts will have to follow the Read Act. The goal of the Minnesota Read Act is to have every Minnesota child reading at or above grade level every year, beginning in kindergarten, and to support multilingual learner and students receiving special education services in achieving their individualized reading goals. They will have to submit a new literacy Act plan that will be the best fix for the district.
The legislature has been busy with 4,800 new bills and only 1,500 are being heard. Superintendents are going to the capitol on key bills. House File 3558 is the Long Term Roofs, Sidewalks and Parking lot. Senate bill 4305 is for projects up to $100,000 that does not have to go to the voters to proceed.
The school resource officer bill cleared. Paula Boomgaarden and Ryan Grow will be working to revise the budget for next year.
Custodian Virgil Tronnes will be getting quotes on fixing the bathrooms for cost and repairs.
The Transportation committee will be meeting. The enrollment report had 527 last month and 525 this month.
New Business
The board hired Calli Larson as the Assistant Track and Field Coach for $2,880. Jason Dixon was hired as the Junior High Baseball Coach at Step 1 for $1,800. He has played baseball and also in the minors.
The board approved the Tenure for four teachers including: Heidi Marsh, Amanda Bodensteiner, Stacie Petterson and Andrea Millar.
They accepted the resignation of Timothy Swanson who has been with the district for three years and accepted the resignation of Jill Nelson as School Board member. Her term expires in 2026. Applications will be available for those wishing to apply. They also accepted the resignation of Gerald Merck as extra curricular Bus Driver.
They set an enrollment cap on specific grades for the 2024-2025 school year. 4th at 26, 6th at 50, 7th at 44 and 8th at 50. It can be revised at any time or month. This does not affect students who are already enrolled from another district, move into the district or are residents.
Watson Consulting will be getting a legal notice for written quotations for Transportation Services beginning with the school year in 2024.
The board approved the retirement of Cathy Dickey on June 30, 2024 after 26 years. She was hired on May 26,1988 for Junior High Science.
Consent Calendar was approved. Cash and investments were $4,672,899/08. A 4% increase in the General Fund. Food Service fund is still positive.
Bills were paid for the total of $651,682.95 with $415,684.12 for non-payroll and $235,998.83 for payroll.
